US media is dominated by small number of companies: American scholar

In his interview with Iran’s Resistance International Film Festival (RIFF), American history professor Lawrence Davidson has highlighted the fact that the US media is dominated by a very small number of companies with a narrow range of political perspective.

The author of “Islamic Fundamentalism, Cultural Genocide” also slammed the US inhuman sanctions against Iran saying that, “Not only are sanctions illegal and immoral collective punishment, but they divide people and prevent them from interacting and experiencing and appreciating or what's often revealingly referred to as humanizing each other.”

Davidson also considered Hollywood and the U.S. government complementary to one another. “The two feed off each other. Movie makers, like everyone else, identify with one or the other of two militarist political parties, each trying to out-do the other in nationalism and militarism. Many movies in Hollywood are in fact assisted by, advised by, or controlled by the US military or related agencies. And many more movies appeal to broad and multi-lingual and poorly educated audiences by replacing human interaction with cartoonish fighting which requires dehumanized enemies.”

Davidson further mentioned five topics that American and European films do not pay attention to and they should, including the nuclear danger, the weapons industry, nonviolent activism and the climate/environmental danger. He also thinks that there is endless war propaganda towards Russia, Iran, North Korea, China and Libya.

The board member of the US Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel is hopeful for the resistance movement to be able to stand against the powerful West propaganda, “US media is dominated by a very small number of companies. And people turn to video rather than text to inform and entertain them, meaning that more expensive productions gain an advantage. Yet, it is certainly possible to open up cracks and break through with new perspectives.”
